Description

Comparable to a meditative stroll in a garden, this anthology of excerpts brings together relatively short, jewel-like passages from Schuon's works both published and previously unpublished. In choosing the excerpts, care has been taken to include texts concerning the spiritual life in its simpler and more concrete aspects, so that no one is excluded from the insights offered here. An important complement to the author's metaphysical perspective, this is a work that speaks directly to our thirst for meaning and profundity. (Also available in a paperback edition.)

"The beauty of the sacred is a symbol or a foretaste of, and sometimes a means to, the joy that God alone procures.

"The beauty of the sacred is a symbol or a foretaste of, and sometimes a means to, the joy that God alone procures.” — Sometimes a brief and concise thought can have a deep and long-lasting effect on our soul. This collection evokes the essence of spiritual truths. Browsing through this book is like taking a meditative stroll through a garden — whether one can spend an afternoon or only a few moments, there is nourishment and refreshment for mind and soul. Schuon is known for his ability of going to the heart of a subject, and these epigrammatic passages are akin to Platonic recollections in their power to rekindle our awareness of the quintessential values that constitute the soul’s certitude, serenity and happiness.

About the Author(s)

Frithjof Schuon

Frithjof Schuon (1907-1998) is best known as the foremost spokesman of the “Traditionalist” or “Perennialist” school and as a philosopher in the metaphysical current of Shankara and Plato. He wrote more than two dozen books on metaphysical, spiritual, artistic, and ethnic themes and was a regular contributor to journals on comparative religion in both Europe and America. Schuon’s writings have been consistently featured and reviewed in a wide range of scholarly and philosophical publications around the world, respected by both scholars and spiritual authorities. Besides his prose writings, Schuon was also a prolific poet (see a listing of Schuon's poetry books) and a gifted painter of images that always portrayed the beauty and power of the divine, and the nobility and virtue of primordial humanity.

World Wisdom features a series titled "The Writings of Frithjof Schuon", which includes many new editions of classic books by Schuon in new translations and with additional materials. Our online Library contains many articles and poems written by Frithjof Schuon, allowing readers to see a representative sample of his remarkable body of work.

Excerpts from Echoes of Perennial Wisdom (hardcover)

Excerpts from "Echoes of Perennial Wisdom"

There is no true greatness outside the Truth.

***

If we want truth to live in us, we must live in it.

***

To know God is to love Him, and not to love Him amounts to not knowing Him.

***

Love of God is first the attachment of the intelligence to the truth, then the attachment of the will to the Good, and finally the attachment of the soul to the Peace which is given by Truth and the Good.

***

The beautiful is not what we love and because we love it, but that which by its objective value obliges us to love it.

***

Beauty, whatever use man may make of it, belongs fundamentally to its Creator, Who through it projects into the world of appearances something of His Being.

***

A will directed towards the Good and a love directed towards the Beautiful are the necessary concomitants of knowledge of the True, and their repercussions are incalculable.
