About the Author & other Contributors, including HH The Dalai Lama

Samdhong Rinpoche

Samdhong Rinpoche is the fifth reincarnation of that title in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. He holds a Doctorate in Buddhist sciences from the University of Drepung in Tibet. In 1959, Rinpoche fled to India along with His Holiness the Dalai Lama. In India he served as a teacher to monks in exile and was appointed director of the Central Institute for Higher Tibetan Studies. On July 29, 2001, Rinpoche was named Kalon Tripa, or Prime Minister of the Tibetan Exile Government, the first political leader to be directly elected by the people in exile. The World Wisdom book Samdhong Rinpoche Uncompromising Truth for a Compromised World: Tibetan Buddhism and Today's World is a unique series of in-depth dialogues with him and which covers a broad range of topics, including how the world came to follow a destructive path of unprincipled pragmatism and compromise, and what we can do to remedy it.

HH the Dalai Lama

His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, is both the spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people. He was born in 1935 in northeastern Tibet, and was acknowledged as the reincarnation of the previous Dalai Lama at age two. Four years later, he began to study Buddhist philosophy and Tibetan culture as well as many other subjects until completing his education at age 23. Following the invasion of Tibet by the communist-inspired Chinese Army in 1959 and the impending threat on his life, he escaped into exile and has since resided in Dharmsala, India, the seat of the Tibetan Government-in-exile. He is a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize and an author of numerous books and essays, including Kindness, Clarity and Insight (1984), A Human Approach to World Peace (1984), and Ocean of Wisdom (1989).

Reviews of Uncompromising Truth for a Compromised World

"Donovan Roebert edits a treatise linking Tibetan Buddhist principles with concerns of the modern world. Rinpoche is the first elected prime minister of the Tibetan government in exile and has long contributed scholarly and spiritual thoughts to the world: he's professor whose convictions are solidly based on Buddhism – and his blend of reflection, experience, and self-insight pair well with a world vision acknowledging modern social pressures."
Diane C. Donovan, writing in California Bookwatch

"This important work … provides a Buddhist viewpoint of the political arena, arguing that the current state of the world is a deterioration of essential truth and wisdom and explaining how Buddhist principles might be applied to political situations. Maintaining that evolution can be influenced by humanity, a Buddhist analysis explains the current state of law, morality, science, and art. The Chinese occupation of Tibet is discussed in depth, and the importance of continued nonviolence is emphasized. The discussions end with a basic primer on Buddhist philosophy. Including a foreword by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama, this is recommended for academic and public libraries."
Library Journal

“I highly recommend this book for those who want to know Buddhism, Buddhist philosophy of life, truth about Tibet, and the Buddhist view on the modern world. Samdhong Rinpoche’s concept on every topic is very amazing and enlightening!”
Tenzin Namgyal, translator, Tibetan Cultural Center Bloomington, Indiana

“Like His Holiness the Dalai Lama, he is deeply committed to non-violence and, in this wide-ranging series of interviews, he delivers a timely and compelling message which has relevance not just for the Tibetan people and their struggle, but for humanity as a whole.”
Sogyal Rinpoche, author of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying

“As part of my role as the lead interlocutor for His Holiness the Dalai Lama in his efforts to reach out to the Chinese leadership to resolve the Tibetan issue, I rely on and have received the total support of Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche. In all his different responsibilities, Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche is grounded in firm and principled convictions. I am therefore pleased to see a book that dwells on his philosophy and in the process helps the public better understand this distinctive Tibetan.“
Lodi G. Gyari, Special Envoy of H.H. the Dalai Lama

"Rinpoche is a great scholar, with a deep and vast understanding of Buddhist philosophy, both sutra and tantra; not only a scholar but a great practitioner, living in the meaning."
Lama Zopa Rinpoche, head of the Federation for the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition

"Donovan Roebert has done the world a great service in bringing to its attention the existence, personality and wisdom of Samdhong Rinpoche, chairman of the cabinet of the Tibetan government in exile. Firmly rooted in the ground of non-violence, like His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Rinpoche is a perfect example of what a Buddhist politician should be—a sublime blend of spiritual realization and worldly wisdom. This book is essential reading for those who want to know how politics and religion can work together to do what they're supposed to do: benefit people and the world as a whole."
Dr. Nicholas Ribush, Director, Lama Yeshe Wisdom Archive

Excerpts from "Uncompromising Truth for a Compromised World"

“Samdhong Rinpoche is someone I hold in high regard. He belongs to the last generation of Tibetans that reached adulthood and accomplished a part of his monastic training before leaving Tibet. . . . Despite his genuine qualities and accomplishments, I have always found Samdhong Rinpoche to be an abstemious, reserved man. Consequently, his firm views on many issues may not be widely known outside the Tibetan community. Considering the important position he now occupies, I believe the editor of this book has done a public service in preparing this selection of Rinpoche’s observations and opinions.”
—from the foreword by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama
