About the DVD
This 2-disc DVD is the first video biography of Frithjof Schuon (1907-1998), the foremost author of the Perennialist school of comparative religion, and one of the most gifted contributors to the body of knowledge on the sacred, spirituality, and religious traditions during the twentieth century. The first disc (113 minutes) is an extensive biography of Schuon, who was not only a prolific author of prose, but also a poet and a painter. Schuon’s remarkable spiritual and geographical journeys, and his many encounters with notable spiritual authorities of numerous traditions are described, and are illustrated with beautiful photos, many from Frithjof Schuon’s private collection. The narrative is accompanied by beautiful musical compositions which were among Schuon’s favorites. The production also features Schuon’s paintings and poetry. The Special Features section, on the second disc, includes a 40-minute overview of his writings as well as 30 minutes of additional interviews with Frithjof Schuon himself made during his final years. Other interviews with people who knew Schuon or his work are also found throughout the 2 discs. These people include his wife, Catherine Schuon, Martin Lings, Huston Smith, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, James Cutsinger, Harry Oldmeadow, and Patrick Laude.

Two recent books on Frithjof Schuon are closely related to the materials in the DVD. The first, also titled Frithjof Schuon: Messenger of the Perennial Philosophy (World Wisdom, 2010), was written by Michael Fitzgerald and is a broad-ranging biography covering Schuon's life, thought, and art. A more comprehensive treatment focusing on Schuon's thought can be found in Frithjof Schuon and the Perennial Philosophy (World Wisdom, 2010), written by Harry Oldmeadow.

“This biographical film is a powerful and worthy testament to this epoch’s most important philosopher and religious thinker, Frithjof Schuon. His written opus, rich in truth and beauty, has served as a continual source of spiritual guidance and illumination in my life. Therefore, I relish the opportunity this film provides for others to experience the sense of the sacred which permeates Schuon’s life and writings.”
—Huston Smith, author of The World’s Religions: Our Great Wisdom Traditions
“This DVD, extensive, detailed, and intimate, is expertly edited, with a series of memorable images and beautiful music. It comprises both biographical narrative, and a series of interviews with Schuon’s wife and several of his life-long associates from both Europe and America.”
—William Stoddart, author of Remembering in a World of Forgetting
“Drawing on Frithjof Schuon’s memoirs, on rare film interviews and photographs, on his prodigious philosophical and artistic corpus, and on the reflections of some of his closest friends and followers, this captivating documentary illuminates the life and work of the most profound metaphysician of our epoch. Frithjof Schuon, Messenger of the Perennial Philosophy leaves the viewer with that heightened sense of the sacred which pervades Schuon’s work and which he sought to restore to the contemporary world. A magnificent tribute to one of the most remarkable spiritual teachers of the modern era.”
—Harry Oldmeadow, La Trobe University (Australia), author of Frithjof Schuon and the Perennial Philosophy
“The late Martin Lings often said that among Schuon’s most important achievements was the creation and dissemination of a spiritual ‘civilization’. Here one is given the opportunity to glimpse some of the beauties of that fascinating world. Mirabile dictu, mirabilius visu”.
—James Custsinger, author of Advice to the Serious Seeker: Meditations on the Teaching of Frithjof Schuon and editor of many new editions of Schuon's books
