Detailed Description of The Sacred Foundations of Justice in Islam

This book is the definitive introduction to the writings of 'Ali, who was the son-in-law and cousin to the Prophet Muhammad, the fourth caliph to Sunni Muslims, and the central figure in Shi'a Islam. These papers provide a better understanding of 'Ali's essential contributions to the ideas that formed Islamic thought, can help bridge the misunderstanding between Sunni and Shi'a Muslims, and can clarify for westerners the Muslim concept of justice. Two of this book's three essays, won the top two prizes at the International Congress on Iman 'Ali held in Iran in 2001 and Seyyed Hossein Nasr has called them "among the best writings on this extraordinary figure in Western languages and are obligatory reading for anyone interested in 'Ali but not familiar with Islamic languages."

Reza Shah-Kazemi, Leonard Lewisohn, and Ali Lakhani contributed essays to this book.

Excerpts from The Sacred Foundations of Justice in Islam

"Let us hope that it will be read by those interested in the meaning of justice from the traditional perspective as well as students and devotees of Islam in general and 'Ali in particular. Let us also hope that Muslims themselves, especially those brought up in the West and not well acquainted with Islamic languages, will gain through this book a deeper understanding of the life and thought of 'Ali and the deepest meaning of justice in the Islamic tradition."

Seyyed Hossein Nasr, from the introduction
